Too often, birth becomes a site of trauma for families and for the professionals supporting them.
In the UK, birth trauma affects significant numbers of people, particularly those from Black, Brown and minoritised backgrounds, who are at greater risk of experiencing harm and having their pain or concerns dismissed. These traumatic experiences are rarely the result of a single moment, but instead arise from a series of small ruptures — missed opportunities, communication breakdowns, and care that fails to acknowledge the person behind the patient.
While the emotional and psychological impact on families is profound, it is important to recognise that healthcare professionals are also affected. The act of holding space for others during moments of crisis and transition can carry a deep emotional toll. The people tasked with providing compassionate care are often under immense pressure themselves, and may lack the time, support or systemic conditions needed to prevent trauma from occurring in the first place.
Rehumanising Birth is a transformative, evidence-based training day designed for professionals working within maternity services. This immersive session explores the psychological, physical and socio-cultural dimensions of birth trauma, drawing on the lived experiences of both service users and healthcare staff.
Together, we unpack how birth trauma manifests not only in those giving birth, but also in those delivering care — and explore how everyday practices may unintentionally contribute to harm. Through honest, reflective conversation, we create space for professionals to consider their own experiences, grow their understanding, and develop new skills around reducing trauma.
Led by experts in trauma-informed practice and maternity care, the training offers practical strategies to support safer, more compassionate births. You’ll leave with tools to improve communication, build psychological safety, and offer dignified, person-centred care both to birthing individuals and to one another.
This is more than just training. It’s an invitation to do things differently: to centre humanity in birth, and to build systems where everyone — families and professionals alike — can feel heard, supported and safe.
We’re ready to discuss any challenges or goals around institutional and organisational racism that you are facing. From safely but squarely addressing the elephant in the room to teaching your colleagues to deliver training themselves, we can help you unlock closer relationships, greater wellbeing and the higher levels of performance you’ve been missing out on.

As a healthcare professional committed to equity and inclusion, I entrusted Mokita for two years to provide racial injustice training to hundreds of midwives and doctors in the Southeast spanning over 17 different NHS Trusts. The sessions were transformative, with engaging delivery and impactful content. I also commissioned Mokita to train academics and develop online resources, all yielding exceptional results and feedback.
Mokita delivered insightful Anti-racist Training to our Senior Leadership and core team members at the College of Paramedics. Their approachable and engaging facilitators, Elli and Alisha, received rave reviews from participants, who found the training to be highly impactful and superior to previous diversity training. We highly recommend Mokita's training for healthcare professionals.
