We’re a diverse team by design, which allows us to do what many anti-racism and inclusion trainers can’t.
Alisha and Elli’s strong working relationship is used to role models dialogue and interaction honestly within the training space, helps everyone feel safe and ready to be more honest themselves. Using authentic experiences – and mistakes – from our own lives is a lot more effective than abstract examples, and also makes it easier for others to feel they can share theirs.
The journey isn’t easy. Unlearning and decentring the whiteness and Eurocentric frameworks we’ve always accepted is deeply unsettling. But if the space is supportive participants will feel able to acknowledge and use their piece of power to make changes. This is what makes us unique – and because it informs our methodology and materials, every workshop has this at the core, whoever is leading the session.
We believe effective approaches to anti-racism need to be inclusive in every sense of the word. That’s why our methodology draws on as many insights as possible, from staff surveys and data analysis to personal experiences - including our own.
Through our training we create the opportunity for people to make deep and profound re-evaluations of themselves. And our success in doing this comes from our ability to create an atmosphere of psychological safety and a clear emphasis on personal accountability. These are the two key ingredients we have found to be essential in changing the way people think and act with anti-racism.
Online delivery for us is never a compromise, in fact we’ve found it can offer the ideal conditions for making individuals feel protected. The psychological adjustments required of individuals during a session are substantial. Self-reflection, openness, and unlearning embedded beliefs can be hard work.
A video call from home or a private space can often be the best setting for individuals to commit themselves to the process. They need to allow themselves to feel vulnerable and have the conversations that – as they will discover – they have always needed to have. Undertaking the process online ensures that extra layer of safety is there, so they can focus on the matter in hand, unpacking and honestly reflecting on experiences from their life.
The driving force behind Mokita and our training methodology is our founders, Alisha Airey and Elli Bliss – dedicated and award-winning equity and diversity specialists with a wealth of practical and research-based expertise. Mokita delivered insightful Anti-racist Training to our Senior Leadership and core team members at the College of Paramedics. Their approachable and engaging facilitators, Elli and Alisha, received rave reviews from participants, who found the training to be highly impactful and superior to previous diversity training. We highly recommend Mokita's training for healthcare professionals.
As a healthcare professional committed to equity and inclusion, I entrusted Mokita for two years to provide racial injustice training to hundreds of midwives and doctors in the Southeast spanning over 17 different NHS Trusts. The sessions were transformative, with engaging delivery and impactful content. I also commissioned Mokita to train academics and develop online resources, all yielding exceptional results and feedback.
